NeuroMuscular Therapy

NeuroMuscular Therapy is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (which are responsible for every movement, function, and thought) to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. It is, therefore, necessary to stabilize low levels of neurological activity to maintain normal function and overall health. Neuromuscular Therapy will be used to address five elements that cause pain:

  • Ischemia: Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch
  • Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body
  • Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone
  • Postural Distortion: Imbalance of muscular system resulting from movement of body off the longitudinal & horizontal planes
  • Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing of tennis stroke, computer keyboarding) etc.

Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic Massage a type of massage therapy which is focused on treating painful conditions which affect the soft tissues of the body. The massage therapist may integrate a range of techniques to treat these conditions, ideally adapting his or her style for each client, as every person’s body is slightly different. Orthopedic massage may be recommended by a physician who wants a patient to pursue multiple treatment modalities, and people can also see an orthopedic massage therapist independently. Training in orthopedic massage is offered by several massage schools.

A therapist who performs orthopedic massage focuses on problems with the client’s musculoskeletal system. He or she may release tight muscles, help to stretch shortened muscles and tendons, and decompress joints. The goal is to normalize the soft tissues of the body, both to treat specific conditions and to keep clients generally healthy and fit. Because orthopedic massage is designed to treat medical conditions, it requires extensive training, as an unskilled therapist could harm a client by accident.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic massage or lymph drainage massage is a technique used to help increase lymph flow. Increased lymph flow removes harmful substances from the tissues and increases immune function. Lymphatic massage can be useful in cases of edema, sports injury or for people experiencing a sluggish immune system or those suffering from a lack of energy. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal from injury and wards off disease. It is essential to the body’s drainage system for cleansing and filtering out toxins and bacteria. Problems With The Lymphatic SystemAches, pains, soreness and flu-like symptoms could all be caused by congested lymph pathways.

The Benefits of Lymphatic Massage

  • Frequent cold and flu infections
  • Joint pain
  • Headache and migraine
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Arthritis
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Mood irregularities
  • Depression
  • Acne
  • Cellulite

Lymphatic massage aids the increase of lymph flow. When the lymph is flowing as it should, cells are bathed in fresh fluid making the skin look fresh and alive. Lymphatic massage is also useful for people with sports injuries. When applied after a neuromuscular massage, lymphatic massage helps to clear the tissue of debris and reduce the minor edema that can occur after deep tissue massage.

  • Repeated lymphatic massage whilst healing from a sports injury can help to enhance the tissue regeneration process by keeping the tissue as healthy as possible.
  • It is thought that lymphatic massage can also help the scarring process by enhancing circulation and immunity.
  • Increased lymph flow around the scar stimulates damaged lymph vessels to heal.
  • Another common use of lymph drainage massage is in breast cancer cases.
  • Women who have had axillary lymph nodes removed sometimes develop edema in their arm. As long as there is only minor swelling, then a massage therapist with a good knowledge of contraindication and some specific techniques can do a great amount of good.

Lymphatic Massage – Is it Safe?

For the most part, lymphatic massage is safe. However, as with all massage therapies, there are some contraindications. For lymphatic massage specifically, these include acute inflammation, malignant tumors, thrombosis, and major heart problems.

To get the best results from a lymphatic massage, seek out a suitably trained and qualified therapist.

Deep Tissue

Deep Tissue is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.

It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage. Unlike Relaxation massage, deep tissue  usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:

Chronic pain – Limited mobility – Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury) – Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome Postural problems – Osteoarthritis pain – Fibromyalgia -Muscle tension or spasm

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother’s needs. It is also called pre-natal massage.

Pregnancy Massage is different from regular massage as the mother’s body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby.

Also, some massage techniques, such as deep tissue work, cannot be used. Certain areas of the body should be avoided during pregnancy.

Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints.

It’s a popular complementary therapy during pregnancy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited.

Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.

Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.

Look for a massage therapist who is certified in pregnancy massage.

That means that the therapist has had specialized training in pregnancy massage, and knows what is safe for the mother and baby.

Many massage therapists do not recommend massage in the first trimester. Also, women with certain health conditions may not be able to have a pregnancy massage. It’s best to consult your doctor and a certified pregnancy massage therapist.

Geriatric Massage

Geriatric Massage was developed for use on the elderly. This style of massage addresses specific issues common to elderly individuals, such as increased fragility and sensitivity to touch. Massage therapists can pursue certification in geriatric massage, and this style of massage is also sometimes taught to nurses and other care providers who work in hospitals and institutions which care for the elderly.

Many people feel that touch is beneficial, on the basis of their own personal experience. Several studies have also supported the idea that touch can have a positive impact on physical and mental health. Elderly people often feel very isolated and alone, so focused on touch from a skilled massage therapist or nurse can help ease depression, stress, and other emotions related to perceived isolation. Touch can also stimulate circulation, boost the immune system, and ease the aches and pains which plague many elderly bodies.

Several issues must be considered when working on the elderly. The first is that elderly bodies tend to be more delicate. Deep tissue work and penetrating massage techniques are not suitable for many geriatric clients, because these styles of massage can cause pain and bruising. Elderly bodies also experience more stiffness and joint problems, and this issue must be taken into account when working with the elderly. The skin of older people is also very fragile, requiring the use of massage oil or cream and gentle massage techniques to avoid tearing or irritation.
